PREFAB COMPACT HOME
WWW.PREFABCOMPACTHOME.COM
Presenting a mixture of all types of prefabricated modular homes or manufactured homes. By prefabricated i mean small, medium or large buildings built inside a confined area like a large warehouse type building or large storage yard and then transported by a large truck either in parts or as a whole complete unit to it's site of use destination . . .
Also Visit My Other Websites Select From Box Below
Please remember that most or all prefab building kits require site preparation, utilities installed and the foundation built before erection of the home can take place. You must remember to include this fact plus the cost of any required building permits and truck transporting costs
to get an accurate total cost of construction. It has been brought to my attention by an enthusiastic viewer of this website that these prefab homes or cabins are quite a bit more expensive to buy and install compared to having an equivalent home built by a local contractor in your area. And cost a lot more to finance. I agree with those who say that many of these prefab homes and sheds are falsely marketed as "Affordable Housing" when in fact they are pricey "Boutique" items for the wealthy. But also keep in mind that your webmaster (me) has never worked in any of the building trades nor financial housing industries. So buyer beware! Do your research (Due Diligence) prior to making a commitment to purchase any home whether prefab or site built. The time spent will be worth your peace of mind.
Just so you'll know . . . This website is advertising driven. Advertising income pays the bills like hosting fees and other expenses. I am adding another quality advertising source which i like a lot - Amazon.com. If you the viewer of this website would consider making purchases of the items that interest you from my 'Amazon Ad Placements' that would be very helpful and appreciated. When you make purchases through these Amazon links, I receive a very modest sales commission on any purchase you make, but it doesn't cost you a penny. The prices are exactly the same as buying on Amazon directly, and there is no extra charge to you; Amazon pays the commission fees.
Everyone is welcome to visit my websites as much as they want even if you do not buy anything.
UPDATE: Actually, this "crossover" situation has become somewhat of a problem for me because over the many months of working on/updating my websites, people building these consumer sheds are also expanding their line as never before and it is not unusual to find traditional shed builders now building and marketing not only sheds, but small mini-cabins, and backyard home office type buildings. So some businesses make at least 3 types of structures: Utility sheds, tiny livable cabins & backyard home office or garden buildings. Interesting trend. It's hard to keep up with these folks. Also, some people are now saying anything under 2000 SF is considered a 'Small Home'.
Also, i want to comment about the Log Cabin situation. The term "Log Cabin" or Log Home" is used to describe two kinds of building systems as far as i can tell: One building system uses actual milled whole logs for wall construction and another uses " Log Siding" or what are called "Half Rounds" attached to the cabin siding. Big difference in my opinion. So, i have decided to include on this website any homes u' the "Log Siding" but called "Log Cabins" which to me is not a true log cabin and then keep my other website: " prefab log cabin kit" pure, featuring only true milled whole log timber construction.
Also, Very Important Thing To Do . . . Please do not give a deposit or cash payment to any of these businesses listed here without first doing your research on them and establishing some sort of confidence that they are going to fulfill their end of the deal. I have not, nor can i screen these listings here - they are here for your use as a starting point in your search for a home for yourself. Some of them may be out of business, in bankruptcy, or having financial difficulty, or God only knows what kind of problems they could be having. Please try to go to great lengths to protect yourself - They do!

WORLDHAUS Billed as 'Affordable, Eco-friendly Modular Kit Houses. I do not know if this is something available in the US or not, probably not because it probably does not meet or exceed our current building code system. But, anyway this is a nice little home and could possibly by used in areas of the US where the building code would
allow this type of home, like maybe some parts of Texas or other states with a more liberal code system. There are videos on this website which show how this little home is built, so you can get a general idea of it's construction.
“WorldHaus manufactures and builds customized, weatherproof homes for families in the developing world at a price they can afford, employing a modular building system that allows families to build to any size and configuration they desire. With a WorldHaus home, a family also can include amenities like clean burning stoves, toilets, and solar electricity systems. WorldHaus' base model – a one-room, 20 square meter (220 square foot) home – can be built in about 10 days at a starting cost of approximately $1,500. With our local construction model, we can cut the cost of a quality house in half. We are working with microfinance institutions and regional rural banks to make our homes available for monthly installments of $20, well within the reach of rural middle class families making between $3 and $10 a day. We are also in the process of setting up partnerships with state governments, NGOs, and landlords to make the homes available to families making less than $2 a day through subsidies and rental housing programs.”

RARE PLANT RESEARCH This listing here is not really something i would normally include on this website, but i am hoping that many of you would find this kind of interesting. This link goes to my first cousin's website. This guy is highly creative and has an IQ probably 200 times mine. He would probably disagree and say his IQ is 500 times mine. But, anyway in spite of our great difference in abilities and intelligence, i think it would be nice to showcase his very beautiful home and property. If you are a person who has an interest in rare plants, Burl, my cousin is the man to see.
He has an incredible background in plant research and has traveled all over the world looking for rare species of plants, truly incredible and has made a business out of his hobby. Even though we no longer communicate or have a relationship, this is still something to write about. The castle he built i think was built using 'river rock' hauled in by dump truck. This home and garden are located in Oregon City, Oregon.
“Burl Mostul founded Rare Plant Research, a specialty nursery, in 1987. In the early years the nursery focused on plant research, collector plants and varieties new to science. About ten years ago the nursery shifted focus to garden plants and now Burl travels the world looking for new plants as well as developing new hybrids for Northwest gardeners. Rare Plant Research is open to the public only one or two weekends a year and has become an event attracting 1,000 or more people. In 2008 was he and his wife built a stone chateau modeled after a 12th century Romanesque church, surrounded by ponds and gardens featuring many rare and unusual tropical and temperate plants. The most recent addition is a bromeliad garden filled with boulders, olive trees and landscape bromeliads.”

CABIN ON STILTS If the pictures tell the story accurately this looks like a very nice place to live in Missouri. The picture on the right is a very unique design in my opinion, notice that it is built on stilts designed to allow the flooded river to flow underneath. I have had this listing in storage for a long time. I like it, and want to mention that i have no connection whatsoever to the 'Regions Land Company' and do not receive any form of remuneration from them. Also, i wished there were some other pictures of this particular cabin available, because it sure looks well suited for the type of environment it is located in. Nice cabin design in my opinion.

“The Southern Missouri Ozarks have long been known for their crystal clear rivers and creeks. There is very little cropland in the Ozarks so there is virtually no pesticide-runoff, which in other areas of the country is a main cause of polluted groundwater and water tables. We feel there are two types of people in the world . . . Those who love the Ozarks and those who have not yet visited the Ozarks! You'll find amazing views, excellent hunting and fishing and limitless outdoor recreational activities including canoeing, horseback riding, camping, hiking, four-wheeling, birdwatching, spelunking and even scuba diving. Our excellent climate and friendly residents make the Missouri Ozarks the perfect choice for a vacation property or permanent residence.”

NORTHWESTERN TINY HOUSE PROJECT This project has been going on for some time. It is far enough along that the website has enough material to publish here. Lots of good pictures to view. Nothing for sale, just some good information.
“This project is an ongoing student collaboration to bring sustainability awareness to the Northwestern community and beyond. What had started as an ambitious class project has now become a passionate mission to inspire future endeavors towards improving sustainable living. The Tiny House Movement is a response to the growing desire of smaller and simpler living spaces for those who feel concerned about the environment and the negative impact of excessive resource consumption. A leading advocate of this movement, Jay Schafer, founder of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, provides pre-made homes and building plans for small houses ranging from 65 to 837 total square feet. Building upon Jay's ideas, our team set out to design and construct a tiny house sized less than 130 square feet that will function as a completely independent system.
It will generate its own inputs and outputs without the need to connect to any outside sources. After six months of researching and consulting with various experts, our team has produced plans for our Casita, a single-person home designed for providing its user all the necessary resources to live year-round. Please note: We are a student group. Our house is intended only for display and learning purposes and will not be for sale. We will not be selling plans or homes, but we welcome enthusiasts and will share any of our research and experiences.”

THIS TINY HOUSE This blog linked here is very good in my opinion, especially if you like to look at pictures. I try to keep duplicate material down to a minimum on all my websites, but this blog linked here has a lot of unique material not listed on any of my websites. Picture on the right is a sample of what you will find here, it is called: 'Pedal-Powered Shanty Boat'. On this date (3-10-12) i could find 41 pages of material on this blog and you can click here if you want to go to page 41, which is the beginning or end of the blog depending on how you look at it.
“First of all, welcome! I'm humbled that you're on the doorstep of my little blogging playground. My name is Hillary and I've been downsizing and simplifying my life for about a decade. I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of it. Maybe your journey is not so different from mine. Maybe you gave up nearly everything and started from scratch. Maybe you, like me, have done this over and over again. From hippie communes to houseboats, each time my wild notions have led me to more tiny abodes, alternative lifestyles, and the dream of living with even less. I can’t quite say why small spaces inspire me so much but I can say that the tiny house bug has caught on in America these days. This blog started 4 years ago when I purchased a 13' travel trailer off Craigslist. Now . . . At times I am a nomadic traveler, a simple living enthusiast, and a debt-free small homeowner in San Diego soaking up a quiet afternoon with my sweetie pie. Currently we are preparing for three months of backpacking in Europe. I am not a coach, a sales person, or motivational speaker. My primary goal is very, very simple: To walk my talk. And in the process, maybe it will help other people lead healthier lives. Thank you for stopping by & keep in touch . . . You can get new blog posts delivered by email or RSS. You can also connect with me by way of Twitter, Facebook, or Google+. More questions? Email me.”

NEW POLE BARN I have created this listing even though it is a little different than most i place on my website mainly because the link goes to a business that really specializes in beautiful post frame buildings used mostly for storage of equipment or whatever, however, many or most are capable of being converted or finished inside to make a nice little home for the buyer. Some of these buildings have already been used as a basis for a residential home. Not all are suitable, but many are suitable for conversion into livable post frame homes. Picture on the right is of their cool looking 'Residential Building 6'.

A-FRAME BY CHAD RANDL I love A-Frame style cabins. It is an old design, and was somewhat a popular item years ago when it was first developed, i think it is a 'Popular Mechanics' type of creation, not sure. Please click on the picture at the right to buy this well liked book from Amazon.com as your purchase helps to support this site at no extra cost to you. Thanks, ~gg
“'A' was the architectural letter form of leisure building in postwar America. Eager to stake out mountain and lakeside retreats, an entire generation of high-end home builders and weekend handymen found the A-frame an easy and affordable home to construct; its steeply sloping triangular roof distinctive and easy to maintain (almost no exterior walls to paint!). Fueled by A-frame plans and kits, the style became something of a national craze, with tens of thousands of houses built. Indeed, the A-frame was an icon for recreation, and acceptable form of modernism (although its origins go back thousands of years), and a convenient tool for marketing a wide range of products, including gas-powered toilets, motorcycles, and canned vegetables; Fisher-Price even made one for children. So popular on the domestic front, the A-frame was eventually adapted to other building types, from roadside restaurants to churches. In a fascinating look at this architectural phenomenon, Chad Randl tells the story of the 'triangle' house from prehistoric Japan to its lifestyle-changing heyday in the 1960s. Part architectural history and part cultural exploration, A-Frame documents every aspect of A-frame living using cartoons, ads, high-style and do-it-yourself examples, family snapshots, and even an appendix with a complete set of blueprints in case you want to build your own! To illustrate the wide influence of the architectural genre, Randl even includes a photograph of Fisher-Price's toy A-frame house. It's such careful research that earns this title an A. 150 color & 75 b/w illustrations. About the Author: Chad Randl is an architectural historian working at the National Park Service. He resides in Takoma Park, Maryland.”

“The housing industry has lost its taste for bigger, cheaper, resource wasteful housing. The new trend is toward environmentally friendly, low impact, low maintenance properties. Q Cabins are the new concept in sustainable micro housing. Every material or system choice used to build the Q is based in a green technology. We use SIPs panels, low VOC water based finishes, natural fibers, high tech insulation methods, low-E insulated glass, reclaimed wood, passive and active solar systems, automatic ventilation systems and sustainable sized footprints. The end result is an architecturally pleasing, resource efficient, and environmentally friendly cabin. No sheet rock. No paint. The Q Cabins are built with quality in mind. MODCELL This business located in the United Kingdom does prefab differently in that they incorporate straw bales in their construction system along with some other green type material. Picture on the right is of their ModCell home made using straw bales as insulation.

ModCell® is designed for use in offices, schools, housing and commercial buildings. FOSHAN MODERN PREFAB HOUSE COMPANY For those of you with the means to do so; here is a company located in China that ships prefab metal frame homes all over the world. Their website is in the English language, plus they have a lot of fairly good pictures of their products. I could not see any square footage figures for any of the houses, but the picture on the right appears to be one of their smaller lower cost models which is a 'NEW light steel frame house' model number: EU-03. Some of their designs are very likable.
“Foshan Modern Prefab House Company is a leading company specialized in designing, manufacturing, construction and marketing of prefabricated homes. As for our prefabricated homes, they are fresh, environmental, economical, and made out of light steel which is the best material in producing a prefabricated house, and made according to standard modular specifications and joined together by bolts. As a result, they are very safe. Our homes can withstand strong winds below grade 12 and earthquakes below grade 8, which is very important for a house nowadays. You are welcome to contact us for more information about our houses; if you are interested in our product. Hope to have good cooperation with you in this housing line on the basis of mutual benefit in the coming future.”

SOUTHERN STRUCTURES This is a prefab home builder you all might like . . . A modular housing business creating award winning designs, located in Florida. Plus, they do have small house designs under 1000 SF. Video on the right features their latest design called 'The Sanibel' — a 1708 SF, 3 Bedroom/2 Bath, 28'X37' ~ 28'X24' small home.
“Southern Structures, Inc. is a specialized contracting firm, operating primarily in Florida, from its office in Ocala, Florida. Founded in 1961, the company specializes in design and contracting for sectional (or modular) commercial and residential buildings. We offer 'concept to completion' services, along with counsel to potential buyers as to the most economical and practical means of accomplishing their building goals. Included here is specific information about selected building types and designs with which we have worked. We invite inquiries about any potential use of sectional or modular buildings. We'll be happy to provide information and suggestions. Most of our buildings are wood-frame structures, but increasing amounts of steel and aluminum are being brought into the designs as more of the buildings are put into very long-term plans, or as fire-protection becomes more important. A number of complete steel-frame home and concrete structures have been built, at economic costs, for varying purposes. The design of the buildings is usually dictated by desired costs ~ low, high, or medium. Almost all of our buildings are intended for full-time use by people in a living or working environment of some kind ~ offices, labs, clinics, classrooms, studies, or similar functions, and homes. Floor plans are extremely flexible; module size is limited mainly by transportation regulations for movements from factory to site. Almost any number of modules can be assembled to make up a complete building. However, the larger the number of modules, the more complex become the roof and air handling systems. Locally, we can usually offer a complete turn-key project ~ from design to completion. If you have an application in mind for a building from 700 SF and up, you should talk with us. Call today for a preliminary discussion on feasibility . . . We won't waste your time or ours!”

CABANA VILLAGE This business located on the East Coast of the United States, prefabricates their own buildings and ships them most places in the lower 48 states. They have a very good inventory or beautiful designs in my opinion. Lots of pictures on their website give the visitor plenty to think about. Picture on the right is of their "Compact 12X18 Cabin".
“Cabana Village cabin kits and cottage bunkies are great as weekenders, lakeside cottages, starter cabins or backyard retreats. An 87" wall height is standard on our kit cabins and you have a choice of a 7 in 12 (30°) or an 10 in 12 (40°) roof pitch. These cabin kits are designed with a sleeping loft and come with either a ladder or 15° hardwood stairs (depending on the size of the unit). Our cabins, cottages and bunkies feature cedar doors, windows and trim and are available in cedar or maintenance-free Canexel siding. All our cabanas have 1/2" plywood roof sheathing and 2x4 SPF framing. With their sturdy construction and use of quality materials, extensive pre-fabrication, ease of assembly, and attractive design, their possible uses are only limited by your imagination. Click on any of the pictures in the filmstrip to see more pictures, details and pricing on the pictured cabins, or use the models listed in the design center as a starting point for your own cabin kit or bunkie kit design. About shipping: To-your-door shipping to most locations within the contiguous 48 United States is included in your structure's price. However, there are circumstances under which extra charges may apply. BISON PORTABLE BUILDINGS This is one of those "cross over" businesses that i mentioned above. Yes, they build sheds, but they also build livable small cabins or mini-homes as they call them. They are really nice and their website has pictures of the finished interiors which include cabinets, bathrooms and kitchen areas. Real nice. Go to their 'Cabins & Mini Homes' tab.

COZY CABINS, LLC This business located in Pennsylvania seems to specialize in small cabins. Even though they refer to their cabins as "Log Cabins" they are not true log cabins in my opinion. But that's OK, they build some nice looking stuff anyway and we are not so much concerned with semantics, as with a quality built cabin for us to live in. They use "Log Siding" on most of their cabins, which might be better than using actual round logs. They have a very good selection of very nice models to choose from, all small cabins. Picture on the right is of their "Adirondack" model cabin available in 12ft, 14ft, & 16ft wide and up to 48ft long.
“Weekend outings can be a time to relax and unwind from the past week's stress and perplexities. A Cozy Log Cabin in a natural setting will provide the perfect place. Just choose one of our attractive cabin styles, then "making memories will begin!" Our Log Cabins make a pleasant place for anyone who wants to "Get Away" from today's fast-paced lifestyle, slow down, and take in a little bit of nature. Log Cabins make a great place for weekend suites, a spot by the lake for your boat accessories, or a quiet office or studio. These rustic Log Cabins are right at home in any natural setting. At Cozy Cabins, LLC we make it the way you want it! The size and the cabin features are for you to choose. But if you want it quick and easy just choose one of our well designed floor plans. Some of the features that make our Log Cabins cozy are the pine walls, yellow pine flooring finished in natural semi-gloss urethane, and the convenience of the kitchen and bathroom. "It's sure to make cozy memories!" All of our Log Cabin styles are prebuilt and delivered to your prepared site. Contact us for information about site preparation and job access, or to let us help you relax this summer in your own Cozy Log Cabin.”

NATIVE HOUSES I don't know how to explain this design business. I think they are based in the country of Latvia. They offer a very unique product, but hard to categorize. The structure which i like the best is the one shown on the right, which combines a canvas wall tent roof with wood frame cabin walls and floor. They have pictures of some of their other design concepts, even a skiing bungalow. Their 'Port Residences' are a great idea for people who would like to live in a boat harbor. Good ideas here. If you decide to visit this website, click on the upper right hand far corner large "X" to remove the cover page and go to their main website. Picture on the right is of their: "EGOIST - is the smallest spatial unit of NATIVE HOUSES series. It is designed to provide 1+1 dweller with exclusive minimum of comfort."
“We as architects appreciate large concrete city buildings. Because of them World isn't build up completely and there are still untouched natural places of inspiration. What we are concerned about is the harsh, stressful and unhealthy environment that often appears in dense urban areas. It often forces people to occupy new natural grounds and expand city borders. By urbanizing NATIVE HOUSES concept we want to show that it is possible to unite the benefits of vibrant city life with intimate, healthy and independent individual living environment. Developers of NATIVE HOUSES concept are closely engaged with academic research of the field and new theories are soon to be implemented in practical projects.”

BOUTIQUE-HOMES Even though this website linked here does not sell prefab small homes, it still is a source of fresh inspiration if you are interested in design ideas. They actually feature many different homes and cabins for rent around the world. A lot of the small hotels or motels offered for rent are very unique to say the least. This site may even expand your idea of what the word 'hotel' really means . . .
“Tailor-made for people for who style is more obsession than afterthought, promising a high-octane injection of visual verve, personality and inspiration into the world of travel. Say goodbye to underwhelming vacation rentals or routine 'designer hotels.' Upgrade to Boutique Homes and Small Hotels, brought to you by the folk who created Verana, a one-of-a-kind, truly handmade, boutique hotel in the jungle of Yelapa, Mexico. With the same dedication to original design, dramatic location and unique experience, Heinz Legler and Veronique Lievre have done the legwork for you, drawing together a thrilling cache of vacation properties from personal homes and private compounds to small hotels. The result is an exciting collection of architectural and design possibilities for a family vacation, romantic weekend tryst or business trip, guaranteed to please the most discriminating visual aesthete. We believe the photographs speak for themselves . . .”

IRONTOWN HOMES These people provide some strong arguments for buying a prefab home. In today's world it seems really the best way to go over having a site built home when taking in all the factors involved. Also, they have some floor plans under 1000 SF. Picture on the right is of their placement in Montana and they also have a similar design in Marfa, Texas. "Predesigned home plans offer a shorter pre-construction phase and a price savings, starting at around $100,000 which includes delivery, set and onsite finish." This company has an active website and have delivered homes all over the US. If their website is any indication, they keep busy . . .
“Each Irontown built home goes through an arduous engineering process. Each home is individually engineered for your exact site. Many design factors go into the individualized engineering of each project. Each project is designed around your site's snow load, wind load, earthquake zone and soils report. Irontown will design your foundation and home so that all of these factors work together to give you the perfectly engineered home for your site. For example, a roof in Lake Tahoe needs to be stronger than roof in Los Angeles. A foundation on bedrock is designed different than one on sand. Let Irontown's expertise help build a home that is perfect for every design factor of your site. Irontown Homes prides itself on the quality of our workmanship. Because of our factory setting it allows us hands on quality control. With a site built home you may have your contractor on site every couple of days if you're lucky. Juggling other site projects and traveling between each project means that you don't always have someone watching over your project. It leaves your project vulnerable for details being missed, vandalism or materials being stolen. Subcontractors are left alone to intemperate the job as they see fit instead of your contractor making sure everyone of you specific details are met. At Irontown we have an unsurpassed advantage with everyone in one single location. Your project manager, design team and construction team are all under one roof. Things can happen quickly and precisely. It's like having your contractor on your job all day every day . . .”

FRIESEN'S CUSTOM CABINS This cabin building business located in Alaska, has built quite a few homes, it seems. Their website has a lot of pictures of their cabins they have built around the state of Alaska, i guess. I think i read somewhere that they will ship their cabin kits anywhere in the lower 48 states. But, i think most of their work is done in Alaska. They build a lot of small cabins by the look of the pictures on their site, which is a good sign to me.
“Thank you for your interest in "Friesen's Custom Cabins". It gives me great pleasure to serve you by making your dream cabin become a reality. Our cabin packages include a pressure treated piling foundation, framing shell, windows, doors, trim, and painted metal roof. We also offer concrete, block, or steel piling foundations at extra cost. Over the past twenty years we have been asked over and over if we produce kits. We always said that we only build on your lot. Well, now we are producing kits for those who want to do the work themselves and save some bucks. With our kits you can easily and quickly erect your cabin and enjoy it right away. You can use the money you save to finish the inside. Each kit comes with a complete inventory list, drawings, directions and an instructional video. We also offer support over the phone or through email. If you run into trouble and need assistance with the project, we have carpenters available to send out to your site at extra cost to lend a hand for a few hours or a few days if necessary. Good luck! I look forward to hearing from you.”

CONESTOGA BUILDERS I am anxious to put this listing up because it is in my opinion a very good design giving the buyer/owner more for their money. I like small two story homes because i think it provides an efficient use of space: Ground space and air space. This design allows someone to have either a downstairs home office or maybe a workshop or just plain open space like in a garage. You double the size of the living space by adding just four walls. The picture on the right is of their 20X20X20 "Eagle Ridge" model shown with 2 door garage (actually probably one large door), but actually this home can be modified to exclude the garage doors (which is what i would do) and in their place put either a regular 36" entry door or no door in front, maybe just one (1/2 door - 8ft) garage door, if you insist.
“This two-story Cape Cod charmer may be used as a cottage, garage with apartment, workshop, home office or storage building. Our Eagle Ridge model is a two-story multi-purpose building that makes a great garage, workshop. cabin, guest house or storage building. The first floor ceiling height is a full 8ft, so no feeling cramped! There are numerous options available including: A choice of sidings, a variety of roof color choices, windows, entrance doors, garage doors, metal roof, wider stairs, exterior stairs, dormers, partitions, lean-to, porch or deck. And the best news: Our prices are 40% to 60% below contractor pricing! Conestoga Builders offers several choices in two-story and single-story buildings, with appropriate modifications, suitable as accessory living quarters. The garage doors can be eliminated or substituted with an entrance door. These unfinished models can be custom-built to your specifications.”

PREFAB FIBERGLASS HOUSE This is the latest project by Jorge Fontan and i am hoping he will produce a model that is under 1000 SF. This particular model appears to me to be quite large, probably too big for this website, and i don't know how many square feet it is, but the picture looks like it might be pretty good size. I think this is a design concept and has not been yet produced into an actual house. Anyway, Jorge sent me an email asking me to put this up for him and i told him, OK.
“This Prefabricated modular house has 4 basic components. A Core where all the utilities connect and the bathrooms are located there as well. There are radiating wings in 7ft, 14ft, and 21ft modules - these can get connected in different configurations allowing for endless possibilities in design for different houses. These components would get modular wall panels, windows and doors to be inserted to allow design variability and modularity.”

WALMART CABIN Please be advised that i - me, the owner of this website call this a 'Walmart Cabin'. Actually, it's a 14ft x 24ft Garage made by a company called "Homeplace" and this is their 'Keystone' model Garage. But you buy this building through Walmart. It's proper name is: Homeplace Keystone Garage-14ft x 24ft. As of this date (7-28-11): The price is $10,052.99. The price includes free delivery of this complete prefab building (I'm guessing free for the lower contiguous 48 US states) which can be modified into a very nice little guest house or personal cabin. Also, i want to mention that Walmart also sells other wood frame sheds or buildings (Priced between $5000 to $7000) that look to me could be converted into nice little cabins by finishing the interior, etc. You will need to paint the exterior of this building as it does not arrive from the factory painted, plus you will need to add your own roofing material, like shingles or something else. Picture on the right is of a completely finished model which is not what you will be buying. My experience buying things from Walmart has always been good, they have an excellent return policy and stand behind their products. So it may not be such a bad idea to buy from them, but please call them to check on the delivery situation. The information i include here is just off their website, not from a live current source.
- Material: Wood, steel.
- Used as a garage, guest house, garden building, outdoor storage, workshop or pool house.
- Enhances your outdoor living experience whether it's children's play needs.
- Elegant structure combines style with function.
- Strong 7' walls with insect and rot resistant Smart Side panel siding.
- Solid steel double house doors (6' x 6' opening) with lock set and key included.
- 2" x 4" Roof rafters (16" on center) with 1/2in OSB sheeting. (MY opinion: 3/4in OSB Sheeting much better!)
- Steep A-frame style roof for maximum storage capacity and boxed in 10" gable overhangs.
- Flexible window and door placement allow for multiple designs.
- 4 Aluminum slider windows with screens, shutters and flower boxes included.
- Comes unfinished ready to paint and shingle.
- Dimensions: 135"H x 288"W x 168"D.

SIDEKICK HOMES This company does not actually build homes or cabins on your land, they sub-let the work out to a builder close to where you live who follows their guidelines and plans, etc. Picture on the right is of their Model #25 called 'One Tree' a 484 SF backyard cabin used to house an additional person on your property.
“Sidekick Homes is a service firm that partners with local builders in various locations to construct our home designs. All of our Sidekick Builders have extensive experience as residential contractors, and are certified in both Green construction and Universal Design. Once you decide to move forward with building a Sidekick you will contract with our Builder Partner directly. We will monitor the progress and your satisfaction during and after completion of your new Sidekick Home. Our Sidekick models pricing ranges from $50,000 to $150,000 for the structure itself, plus the cost of foundation/basement, utilities, and site work. Sidekicks are Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) - in other words a second living unit complete with kitchen and bath. Other names for a Sidekick Home (or an ADU) include Secondary homes or living units (California) Granny Flat, Carriage House, In-law suite, Guesthouse, Casita (Southwest US), Cabanas (Florida), and more. Most communities require that such a living unit be accessory to the primary single family home. It may be included as part of the primary structure, attached to or detached from the home.”

STILLWATER DWELLINGS This business is creating beautiful smallish homes and they get work from all over the US, not just local jobs. Picture on the right is of their 950 SF "Utah Red Rocks sd111" vacation home.
“We founded Stillwater Dwellings on one primary principle: Quality, prefabricated homes do not need to be expensive. When we looked at what was available in the market, we found only two ends of the spectrum being served: Cheap, entry level, mobile homes or very expensive, incredibly modern homes. We realized that no one was building a real home, for real people, at a price that most of us could afford. Thus, we designed our homes to have the highest level of design and style, built with high level of sustainable building practices and materials, at the best value/price in the market . . .
STILLWATER DWELLINGS ARE AFFORDABLE TO BUY
Our homes start below $200/SF depending on floor plan and style package, while many of our competitor's homes end up closer to $300+/SF. Our prices includes all architecture, structural engineering, and state permit fees. No Markup. By managing all of the other activities such as site work, foundation, transportation, etc. for you, but allowing you to pay directly for these services, Stillwater helps you avoid the typical 15% general contractor markup. There are lower Construction financing Costs, because your home is built in a factory and can be built at the same time your site work is being done, your construction schedule is cut to just a fraction of the normal duration. This drastically reduces your construction loan interest fees. With a Stillwater home, you get a solid, upfront price on the home, not a "guesstimate" or budget that usually only goes up.”
Stillwater Dwellings was founded by 2 architects, and 1 builder/developer on these fundamental principles:
- Quality, contemporary, prefabricated homes do not need to be expensive
- Building a new home should be fun and predictable, not stressful and unknown
- Eco-friendly building is not a luxury, it is our responsibility
- Construction costs can (and should) be predictable. Careful, thorough planning and intelligent building processes make this possible
- A prefab home should be elegant and truly livable, not broadcast to the world that it was built in a factory
- A Stillwater prefab home is a smart, predictable alternative to a custom, site-built home

GREENLEAF FORESTRY & WOOD PRODUCTS Even after reading much of what this business is about, i am still not sure what it is they do, but maybe you the reader will be able to figure it out. From what i can tell they harvest the raw material (trees) and make different items from the wood such as nice little cabins and such. Picture on the right is of their "Beam Simple Camping Cabin".
“Nestled in the Wet Mountain Valley of the Colorado Rockies, you'll discover Greenleaf Forestry & Wood Products. Since 1994, we have been providing distinctive forestry services and wood products. Our mission is integrated: Carefully thinning overgrown forests, we greatly reduce the risks of fire and disease and restore natural conditions. We emphasize thoughtful and artistic tree removals, taking out the worst first. This balanced, environmentally sound approach often provides us with a wonderful array of natural wood. In a forest treatment, we may remove hearty red Douglas-fir, soft blue streaked Ponderosa pine, white patina Aspen, or aromatic gnarled Pinon. The sizes and shapes of these woods are intriguing. Our goal is to best utilize these excess renewable materials to help improve forestry economics. Greenleaf pays for removed wood at market value or allows credits to help offset service costs. Our forestry expertise is tailored to each operation and can greatly enhance and protect your landscape.”

SLAB TOWN CUSTOMS Another small prefab business located in Arkansas. This one is getting a lot of publicity lately on the Huffington Post which is where i found it. Not a lot of info on the website, but a fair amount of pictures of their products. They build these small portable cabins plus what they call "Park Models" and they also build sheds.
“Two years ago, Debra and her family lived in a nearly 2000 square foot home on an acre and a half of land. Then her husband lost his job and they began to work 4 jobs between them to pay the mortgage, until one day they remembered they had a choice. Before having their son, Debra and her husband Gary had spent 9 years living in very tiny homes in South America. Living small hadn't felt like a sacrifice, but a way to stay focused on what is important. They decided they wanted to get back to that. They stopped working so hard, sold or gave away all of their extra stuff and began looking for the perfect tiny home. Debra had always liked the Mississippi shotgun style homes, and one day, while browsing craigslist, they noticed an ad for a local Arkansas company custom building tiny homes for a price that could mean an end to house payments. Six weeks and $15,000 later they had their own fully paid-off dwelling. Today, Debra, her husband and 13-year-old son live in a 320-square foot home that is not a sacrifice, but exactly what they need.”

SIMPLE SOLAR HOMESTEADING I think a lot of you folks will like this site a lot which incorporates a lot of alternative energy technology into it's cabin building program (i call it "program"). Lots of sales talk and useful information here for you. But it's good and a lot of people seem to like it.
“This is my little solar cabin in the woods. It is 14x14 with a full loft upstairs and about 400 square feet. It cost under $2000 to build and is powered by a 570 watt solar and wind power system. Scroll down to learn more about the cabin and get plans to build your own solar cabin! The cabin is 14x14 and approximately 400 square feet with a full loft. It includes a kitchen, dining area, bathroom and living area downstairs and a large bedroom and office upstairs. I built this cabin by myself from new materials for under $2000 (not including windows, doors, and porch). I live in this cabin year round. My electricity comes from the solar panels you see on the roof and a small wind turbine. This power runs all my lights, water pump, tv, computer etc. My heat is primarily from direct solar gain through the south facing windows and I use propane for a backup furnace, fridge, stove, and on demand water heater. My propane bill for last year was less than $200. I use a cell phone and have wifi internet. My water is from a free flowing artesian well I drilled myself and I also collect rainwater for gardening. My septic system is a solar composting toilet that I designed and is about two thirds more efficient than standard designs. I grow a garden, fruit trees and raise chickens and rabbits. I also designed a solar methane generator that uses free manure and plant material to produce enough methane to run my converted generator for about 3 hours a day and runs my power tools. Because I have no house payments or monthly utility bills I can live very inexpensively. I own a small business and now I can work when I want as I want. I only work 9 months a year and spend winters on other projects. My goal is to live simply and do as little damage to the earth as possible! This cabin would be perfect as a starter home, vacation cabin, guest house, or bunk house. It is big enough to sleep six comfortably.”

HAWAIIAN KIT HOMES I like this idea and i think it is correct thinking on the part of the blogger to talk about the suitability of building designs. "The most comfortable houses in Hawaii are designed to keep the living space cool and bug free. Long overhanging roofs that cover large lanais are popular in local houses because they keep the sun from shinning directly into the windows and heating up the house. They also allow all the windows to be open all the time, even in driving rain without water splashing into the house. Large, open interior spaces maximize air flow. The popular pier and beam construction in Hawaii raises the house above the damp ground and can add protection from bugs. Most Hawaii style house kits use these design elements to keep the house cool, bug free, and minimize the need for air conditioning. Another benefit of using a local Hawaii style house kit is that the materials are kept on the island so if a building part is broken or missing during construction, you don't have to wait for a shipment from the mainland. Local construction crews have experience building the popular versions of the houses and the county permit process is often smoother since the blue prints are well known by those on the zoning committees."

THE PYRAMID HOUSE I love this cabin. I think they call it the pyramid house and it is part of a series called the "Peak Series". Notice the siding which consists of some kind of slats allowing people to climb all over the exterior. To locate this cabin on their blog, go to the right side, look under INFO for "Projectlist". On Projectlist, scroll down to "2010/06 Peak Series - A series of pre-fabricated summer houses with great movement possibilities, anywhere on Earth."
“This is a series of pre-fabricated summer houses that allows a great portion of social life on a relatively small space. While being a comfortable vacation home for a family it can also easily accommodate a large amount of guests thanks to a sleeping mezzanine floor. The house is pyramidal in its shape with a wood facade with a gap between each board allowing climbing. The house is divided into three floors; in the middle is the sleeping mezzanine located, sandwiched between an open social first floor with a kitchen and a living room, and the upper floor with the master bedroom with bathroom. Each guest bed can be reached through a hatch that connects with the outside, thus giving each guest its private entrance, a fire escape and a nice view from each bed. The upper floor has also hatches from the bedroom and the bathroom. The house will be for sale later this summer at Sommarnöjen, an exclusive Swedish summer house manufacturer that sells pre-fabricated houses from the leading contemporary architects in Sweden. The house can firstly be ordered in two different sizes; 45m2 and 90m2 but can also be adaptable upon request, perhaps as a vessel or a larger scale, such as a summer camp.”

MAX PRITCHARD ARCHITECT Max has a bunch of beautiful creations here. This is the man who designed the house which spans a creek bed called the "Bridge House". But he has a lot of other homes that are equally beautiful. Picture on the right is of "The Tank House".
“The work of Max Pritchard speaks eloquently of its unassuming creator: Deft, grounded and genuine. It is appropriate in a time when the profession is going through a period of self-examination of its role and relevance in South Australia that we recognize a person who has quietly built a reputation and following as an architect of people and place, unaffected by the transient trends and fashions swirling around him. Max Pritchard's work has been consistently recognized by his peers, having received many RAIA Merit and Commendation awards, and by interstate and overseas architecture critics and commentators.”

CABIN FEVER This business has some very good designs available for sale. They say they make private branded cabins. That picture on the right looks familiar to me. I think another company i have listed in this website somewhere sells this model cabin as a "Private Brand".
“At Cabin Fever we do one thing and we do it well. We build Prefab buildings. We have talked about our high quality materials and our efficient process. Here is where we explain the process of making this happen. We call this section how to as in 'how to make this work for you'. Our building packages contain everything that's needed to build your Cabin: Pre-assembled wall panels, doors and windows, the roof system, siding, trim and the interior parts. Everything is precision cut and precisely labeled. We build to order; every project is a little different. We fully assemble the cabin in our shop. When it's complete, we disassemble, label and package every part; we then ship it to you. Our prefab cabins and cottages can be assembled by an owner with building experience. However, many of our clients choose to hire a professional builder. Our cabins are real buildings, in most cases, building permits are required. Cabin Fever is committed to maximizing every opportunity to make greener, smarter, and environmentally responsible products. Our LEED-certified architect approaches every project with sustainability firmly in mind. Our prefab cabins and cottages are 'system built' structures, manufactured to precise specifications in a controlled factory environment. This approach yields many opportunities to exercise sustainable and environmentally responsible business practices. For example, since we build from many standardized components used in several of our building models and sizes, we are able to be extremely precise with material procurement and preparation. This results in minimal material wastage and landfill contribution at both the factory and the project site. At our factory, we use a local work-force whose average commuting distance is less than 5 miles, further reducing our overall carbon footprint.”
